A safe place for children and their carers
Bahay Aruga Inc. was conceptualized and began operating on 30 January 2014. It started with 40 beds, and more were later added as the number of patients referred by the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) continued to grow. These patients come from all over the Philippines, including places as far away as Tawi-Tawi in Mindanao.
Long treatment at PGH can be extremely difficult for children and their carers. Accommodation in Manila is often financially impossible, and some families have had to abandon treatment because they could not afford a place to stay. Others were forced to sleep on hospital floors, with only cardboard or newspaper between their fragile bodies and the cold, sometimes wet concrete.
Helping families complete treatment
Bahay Aruga has made life more bearable for these families. By providing proper accommodation, food and, when needed, medication, the halfway house helps ensure that treatment is no longer an impossible burden.
More patients are now able to complete their treatment because they have a decent and supportive place to stay, referred by their treating oncologists. Completing treatment gives these children a greater chance of survival and brings relief and hope to their families.
